I have been researching my family history. James & Sarah Law being Parents of David Law (who is my gt, gt grandfather. I dont know if anyone visiting  here has any photographs of the farms mentioned in the croydon farms section. Or in fact any pictures of the "ag labs" which nearly all the residents of croydon were. I am keen to see any group pictures, or any specific people from the history recorded in the speculum gregis.
Many thanks for a great site, I will write to you Steve for a copy of the book.

Your photo of the Axe and Compass is not 1900 - it is probably 1915 - the family is my family - they show Walter Tiller with his children - one of them is my mother Maria May Tiller who was born in 1910 in Croydon - Walter died in about 1919 as a result of injuries of the first world war.
I have traced my mother, to her mother, Charlotte Tiller, then Maria Gates, then Charlotte Gates and then Patience Knights, all from the Croydon area.
I have the same photo as the one you have.
My mother always talked of her childhood in Croydon with fond memories and told me many tales of the village life!

I have traced my famly roots to Croydon.
My great grandfather Alfred Wootten was born in Croydon in 1857. His parents were Thomas Wootten & Sarah Anne (Lowings) Wootten.
John Wootten (Canada)
Is there anyone that could check some burials at church in Croydon.

Great site. My paternal direct line ancestors ( to my gt4 grandfather) are the Worland family of Wimpole who were formerly of Eaton Socon, Bedfordshire. I am about to research them there as I now live in Bedford and can visit the RO easily.

Wonderful website.  It would appear I am related to both the Warboys family and the Darnell family mentioned.  Very interesting to read what the Rector thought of my ancestors!

Hi,
Just had a quick look at your website.
Just wondering whether my family history may link up with yours?
My father and his father were born in Ware in Hertfordshire.
Thank you for your feedback.
Kindest Regards
Diane

What a great website, got a long weekend off and have started looking a long way back to the 16th century and the Hickman's from Hinxton x 10 Great Grandparents. Traced one branch ILOT but kept losing them and then found them in Croydon and then googled and found your site. I now know why I had trouble with the different spellings of the name. This site told me who some married, some emigrated to Canada and there was even a letter published from a distant Cousin.
Great stuff, and to find out they were idle, naughty and unrural, but not dull.

Debs

Hi Just heard about this web site, read the book on many occasions. Looks like I may find more info here.
My family 'Larkins' mentioned several times.
Can any one tell about 'LARKINS ROAD' who it was named after, when it was named etc.
Regards
Colin Larkins

Brilliant site Steve!
Re page 87 n/k Nash and Mary Newman; your "somewhat speculative" comment. I'm not sure that I agree with your conclusion that the Nash was Thomas who appeared earlier on page 29. I'm not convinced that the ages of Isibell Nash 5 and Henry Nash 4 in the 1841 census are correct - an Isabella was baptised in 1833 in Croydon and in 1851 Henry's age is 17, which would make them children of Thomas's wife Ann who died in 1835.
In 1851 in Croydon Mary Newman 47 was shown as housekeeper to John Nash 42 (who was Thomas's brother) along with her daughter Mary 22, a visitor John Newman 8, and Isaac Nash 32 boarder (he was actually John's brother).
In 1861 in Croydon John Nash head unmarr 56 was living with Mary Newman wife (ruled through) unmarr 59.
But in 1871 in Croydon John Nash head widower 62 was living with John Newman 28 son b Croydon.
My speculation is that it was John Nash, not Thomas, who was the father of John Newman, who was one of the two children Mary had by ...Nash as stated in Speculum Gregis.
Thomas Nash on page 29 was in Caxton workhouse with son Henry in 1851, and in 1861 he was living in Southwark.
Kind regards
David

Congratulations on a very interesting and informative site.  To my surprise mention is made of my Bartle family and the information certainly adds meat to their bones!  Thank you to all concerned.

I have only recently revisited this site and msut say how much it has improved since the earlier version.  A number of my forebears are described, some with most amusing comments.  It adds life to otherwise monochrome names.
